Oral Ketamine for Anxiety: What You Need to Know.

Updated: Dec 20, 2022

Ketamine is a medication that has been used for many years as an anesthetic in medical settings. Recently, its use for treatments related to mental health and anxiety has become much more prevalent. Ketamine works differently than traditional medications used to treat anxiety and depression, by targeting receptors of the brain's glutamate system, which is involved with how a person processes emotions. Sublingual ketamine is administered between your gums and cheeks or under your tongue, which is absorbed directly into the bloodstream without passing through the digestive system.

The effects of sublingual ketamine on treating anxiety have been studied extensively and found to be quite effective in reducing symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and other forms of acute stress and panic attacks. In studies, participants receiving sublingual ketamine experienced improved mental clarity almost immediately following treatment and showed significant reductions in feelings of anxiousness just two hours following administration. The effects were still present 24 hours after treatment compared with placebo groups who received no treatment. After three weeks of treatment with sublingual ketamine, participants continued to show significantly lower levels of stress and overall improved mood states.

To maximize the effects of sublingual ketamine on anxiety, patients must follow their provider's instructions since dosage amounts may need adjustment depending on individual response. It’s also crucial for patients to know that sublingual ketamine will not work for everyone; however, those who respond positively have seen marked improvements in their quality of life due to its powerful ability to reduce their symptoms quickly and effectively.
